Yellowing Basil

Hey all,

My basil is turning yellow.  I've read that that's due to overwatering, but I find that hard to believe.  I live in the desert and I often forget to water my plants.  I could be wrong, but is there any other reason you know of that my basil is turning yellow?

  1. I remember having this problem with my basil in Tucson, and I think it is over watering. I think that when I remembered to water, I would over-water, and I think this leaches something out of the soil, maybe. I'm horrible at growing potted plants, because I don't water them enough, but I do think the key is to give them a moderate amount every day or two.

That said, my basil always grew like crazy in monsoon season, perhaps due to the cooler temps, but perhaps due to the complete soaking it would get. I was always able to grow huge plants and cut them back completely, making several dinner's worth of pesto, a few times in a season. Mmm, pesto - I'm jealous.

  2. 1. Do you fertilize? Yellowing is often the sign of not enough nitrogen. You might try some Miracle Grow.
    2. How hot as it been? Some plants just give up when it gets too hot. May be that you can't grow basil in Tucson in the extreme heat of the summer. Maggie's success during monsoon season may be due to moderating temps.

  3. Also, think about the possibility of aphids if you are growing indoors. Do you have any ladybugs about. Those little aphid buggers get in the roots and wreak havoc.
